Stigma about Vaping and Electronic Cigarettes

Introduction to Vaping Stigma

Our society has strong views on most new, unique or uncommon activities. Vaping is no exception. It is similar to the mobile stigma that came about when mobile phones were first launched. The media get sales based on shocking data or reports – and when things are so new to the market. It is easy to fool unsuspecting readers into thinking their stories are fact. Let’s have a look at some of the comments publicised in recent months and compare with the scientific data behind those stories. This post lets you see what the true story should state, without any stigmas associated.

Negative Consequences of Smoking and Smoking Around Your Family

Stop Smoking

We are all aware that there is a lot of information on the harsh consequences of smoking and passive smoking in the media, scientific research, knowing someone who’s died of smoking related disease… the list goes on. However, times have changed with COVID-19 and news announcements have highlighted that more people have reverted back to smoking, including those who had succeeded with quitting smoking through vaping. It’s important to remind ourselves of how destructive smoking is to us and our loved ones, through their passive smoking. Then let’s consider the research done on electronic cigarettes and we take a look at the recent video by the NHS which refers to vaping being the equivalent to our health as patches or gum. MatTek Study – Vaping has No Toxic Effect on Lungs

MatTek created human lung cells to determine any health risks associated with vaping an electronic cigarette. Their study fund that vapour and e cigarettes do not have any toxic effect on human lung cells. This research, funded by British American Tobacco, claims that inhaling nicotine in the form of vapour is as safe as breathing air.

Scientists used a robot to expose the lung cell replicas to tobacco smoke, e cigarette vapour and air. When exposed to traditional tobacco smoke for six hours all of the lung cells died. In contrast, when the lung cells were subjected to a continuous dose of e-liquid vapour the results found that the damage to the lung cells was “similar to that of air”.
