Bigger Tank Options
Navigating TPD Restrictions
Background on Tank Sizes
Prior to the introduction of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD), vape tanks with larger capacities—often 4ml or more—were widely favoured by vapers for their convenience and reduced need for frequent refills. However, since the TPD came into effect, all vape tanks sold in the UK and EU are legally limited to a maximum capacity of 2ml. This regulation was implemented to improve product safety and reduce the risk of excessive nicotine exposure, especially for new users.
Demand for Larger Tanks
Despite the 2ml limit, many vapers continue to prefer larger tanks for fewer refills and enhanced style. The restriction has led to some frustration among experienced users who are accustomed to higher-capacity devices.
Innovative Solutions and Workarounds
Manufacturers and vapers have adopted several creative approaches to address the 2ml tank capacity limit:
Bubble and Bulb Glass Extensions: Many tank models now offer optional “bubble glass” or “bulb glass” accessories. These replacement glass sections expand the tank’s capacity beyond the standard 2ml, allowing users to hold more e-liquid without changing the core tank design. These extensions are typically sold separately, as tanks themselves cannot be sold with a capacity over 2ml in the UK and EU.
Tank Extension Kits: Some brands provide extension kits that include a larger glass section and, if necessary, a chimney extension. This allows the tank to remain sealed and leakproof while increasing its e-liquid capacity.
Importing Larger Glass: Some vapers source larger glass components from outside the EU to further increase tank capacity. However, users should ensure compliance with local regulations when using such parts.
